Grant Number:

Amount of Grant:

$5,920.00

Name of Applicant:

Dr. Ruben S. Badalyan

Title:

Senior Researcher, Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia

Description of Project:

To conduct an archaeological excavation on the site of the ancient settlement of Arateshen, in the Ararat Valley, 3 miles south west of Etchmiadzin and 30 miles from Yerevan. Dr. Badalyan will lead a team of 2 archaeologists, 1 architect and 12 workers. The project will study and create a database on the Neolithic Culture of the Armenian Plateau (circa 6,000 BC), one of the least known, least studied periods of the Armenian Plateau. The artifacts uncovered will be dated by radiocarbon analysis in Lyon, France or Berlin, Germany.

Anticipated Results:

In addition to the usual obsidian and bone tools, ceramic sherds, and faunal remains, the project expects to discover complete patterns and architectural remains of mud-brick constructions. Its objective is to unearth material evidence that will shed light on the relations of the Neolithic residents of Aratashen with contemporary societies of the Near East. The excavations of the settlement of Aratashen will advance the study of the Neolithic culture of Armenia, closing the cultural-chronological lacuna in the succession of archaeological cultures of Armenia.
