Margaret H. Demant owned and served as chief operating officer of Walter Herz Interiors, one of the largest design studios in the mid-West, for over forty years. A member of the Interior Furnishing Design Association for over ten years, Ms. Demant served on its Executive Committee, as National President, and as Michigan Chapter President. When she retired from business, Ms. Demant became actively involved at the Detroit Institute of Arts ("DIA"). She has served on the Collections (Acquisition) Committee of the DIA since 1995. In 1996 she was invited to join the Board of Directors of the DIA, in which position she is still serving. In addition, Ms. Demant serves on the Board of four auxiliaries of the DIA: African and African-American Art, the Antiquaries, Asian Art, and the European Painting Council. In 2004, Ms. Demant was awarded the prestigious Detroit Institute of Arts Lifetime Service Award for her dedication and distinguished service. In addition to her contributions to the DIA, Ms. Demant is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Michigan Opera Theatre, the Board of Directors of Jewish Family Service, as well as of several committees of that organization, and an Advisory Board Member of the Brown Center, a day care center for patients suffering from dementia, under the auspices of the Jewish Home for Aging Service.
